You don t have to surf far on the Web to find parallels between the examples you ve seen in this chapter and, for example, the pages of an e-commerce or a business Web site where individual pieces of information are placed all around the page, as well as in an orderly list or grid. Dealing with read-only data is a big subject, and you ve learned just the basics in this chapter. In this chapter, we ve looked at several ways to handle data binding: You learned how to inline-bind a piece of information from the current row in the DataReader or from a DataSet to the property or the text value of a Web control on the page. You learned about an alternative to inline binding that involves directly accessing the data source to return the required information directly. You learned how to list-bind Web controls such as the DropDownList, RadioButtonList, and ListBox. This requires you to nominate a column for the text of each list item and another column to act as the value for each list item.

In this chapter you encountered the majority of the commands you re likely to use in your day-to-day work with Subversion. You created a repository, imported your data, checked out working copies, committed changes, merged conflicts, added and removed files and directories, worked with branches, and covered the lesser-known but still useful Subversion features such as properties. In the process, you gained a general understanding of how to interact with Subversion and what it can do for you. In the next chapter, you ll move beyond everyday use of Subversion, into the realm of the repository administrator, which you ve only glimpsed so far.

The problem with onSaveInstanceState() is that you are limited to a Bundle. That s because this callback is also used in cases where your whole process might be terminated (e.g., low memory), so the data to be saved must be something that can be serialized and does not have any dependencies on your running process. For some activities, that limitation is not a problem. For others, it is more annoying. Take an online chat, for example. You have no means of storing a socket in a Bundle, so by default, you will need to drop your connection to the chat server and reestablish it. That not only may be a performance hit, but it might also affect the chat itself, such as appearing in the chat logs as disconnecting and reconnecting. One way to get past this is to use onRetainNonConfigurationInstance() instead of onSaveInstanceState() for light changes like a rotation. The SqlDataSource, though a great Web control to have in our toolbox, isn t the panacea that you may have thought it was. You saw various examples of when you need to massage it a little to get it to perform exactly as desired. In the next chapter, we ll continue our exploration of data binding by looking at table binding. You ll learn how to show the list of results in pretty much any format you require using the Repeater, DataList, and GridView. You ll also start to see the power that the GridView provides, as well as how you can implement pages that, in the past, would have required a lot of hard work to develop.
